Rose gardening is one of the more popular past times, and one that can create a feeling of calmness, because of the beauty that these roses naturally have. You can never have a fully complete rose garden if you do not try growing climbing roses. This variety of roses are also called trailing roses, ramblers, pillars, and everbloom. They are not vines per se because they do not have support structures of their own. Climbing roses are great ornaments to enhance a fence or an archway in your garden.

Since climbing roses are not able to hold fast to structures the same way vines can, we have to do something to help them. A grower can attach or wind these climbing roses loosely through structures. Most climbing roses can be found on sheds, walls, pillars, fences, trellises, and arbors. It can be anything as long as it is a big and stable structure.

The roses that grow in a lateral direction have more blooms than the vertical ones. The ones that are vertically trained grow short spurs by the stems. The way that climbing roses grow is the only thing that sets them apart from other kinds of roses. They need around six or seven hours of direct sunlight per day. Even if they are roses that grow well in a partly shaded area, they will still need at least four hours of direct sunlight.

If you want to try growing climbing roses, you need to consider the length or the height that the variety you choose can grow to. Some of them can measure as high as thirty feet while some are only up to seven feet. It depends on the species that you grow. You have to check whether the structure you are looking at is capable of supporting the climbing roses. The plants height is dependent on the climate in the area you live in.

You have to choose the rose species that will fit the rest of your garden. There are varieties that bloom throughout the year. Some only bloom during the spring months.

Growing climbing roses is actually easier than other rose plants, because you do not have to prune them as much. In fact the first two years of the plant’s life requires no pruning at all. If you prune the roses each year the way that regular rose plants have to be pruned, you will end up with few blooms. You can prune them every three years at the least but you still have to limit it to taking out the small and old canes at the plant’s base. The younger canes should be allowed to grow and increase in height so that it becomes easier to trail them onto structure.

Rose gardening is not just purely science, it is also an art which can only be completed with a lot of patience. You might have to wait a while before your roses start to bloom. It will be worth it once you get to enjoy their beauty and wonderful fragrance.

Orchid diseases and other Orchid problems such as pest infestations are commonly encountered by anyone growing orchids. Following are some of the common afflictions and approaches to dealing with them:

Common Pests::

Slugs

Mealybug

Greenfly

Fungus Gnats

Whiteflys

Aphids

Centipedes and

Weevels

Sowbugs

Mites

snails

Many of these pests can be avoided if you grow your orchids in your home or greenhouse.

No matter how much you try to isolate your plants however, you will inevitably encounter some of these.

Orchid diseases:

Leaf Rot

Crown Rot

Mildew

Botrytis

Copious air circulation is the most important factor in avoiding and in some cases curing these diseases.

Viral Diseases:

Two of the worst are:

CymMV

ORSV

These diseases are rare. However they can be spread by using contaminated tools or pots. Be sure to sterilize your tools before use.

Orchid Treatment:

Discovering these orchid problems early is key to curing the diseases of orchids. Keep good environmental conditions such as light intensity, temperature, ventilation and humidity.Use the proper soil type for your orchids as well. These basic guidelines will help you avoid many common orchid problems.

Provide proper amounts of sunlight and maintain proper temperatures. Most orchids should get no more than four hours of sunlight a day. High temperatures can stop your orchids from blooming. Try to locate your plant where it will get just the right amount of sunlight or alternately provide light with grow lights.

Learn to water your orchids correctly. Too much water can cause “Basal Rot”. Likewise, too little water can cause “Fusarium wilt”.

If you get viral disease you may have to use fungicides. Rotate the type of fungicides used so the plant does not develop a resistance to it. You may also consider adding insects to control pest infestations.

These are some basic guidelines that will help you avoid many of the common orchid problems, it is always good to consult an expert if you are unsure what is

I have been growing orchids indoors for many years and have always enjoyed their presence in my home. Their natural beauty and wonderfully varied fragrances make them a welcome addition. I have grown many different species of Orchid with varying degrees of success. I have learned a lot over the years about what “not” to do as well.

One key to selecting an Orchid that will thrive in your home is matching your home environment up to the needs of the orchid you plan to grow, particularly in terms of light, temperature and humidity. Consider the areas in your home where you might like to place your orchid plants and ask yourself these questions:

1) What is the average temperature in this spot? will it be too hot? too cold?

2) How much does the temperature vary at night? Orchids like cooler night temperatures.

3) What is the humidity level? It should be a minimum of 40% humidity.

4) How much sunlight will it get throughout the day? will it get too much direct sun?

5) Is there good air circulation in this spot? This is often overlooked but critically important.

You home actually contains many “micro-environments”, these are areas in which the light, humidity & temperature can vary from one another considerably. Moving your plant a few feet one direction or another can make a difference. You can measure the temperature and humidity easily enough in various areas throughout your house to see what is ideal.

If you don’t have many options then place them next to an east facing window if you can, that way they will get morning sun but will be shielded from the too hot afternoon sun. Do not let the orchid’s leaves touch the window however, the temperature of the glass heated by the sun may be to hot and may burn the leaf. Likewise in the winter the glass can cause the leaves to freeze.

If last night you do not sleep well; woke up in the middle of the night and could not back to sleep or feel some back pain in the morning, it means you must have been sleeping on old inner spring or coil mattress. It is sure because those old fashion mattresses do not support your body perfectly. Some points of your body are pressed, so you feel such symptoms.

If you do not want to feel it again, you have to replace your old mattress with Tempurpedic mattresses. This brand has involved with NASA’s projects. It shows that they have good quality and ability in producing good quality mattresses. For many years, mattresses from this manufacture are favored by people. It happens because the mattresses are constructed using two different layers of Tempur pressure relieving materials. The bottom layer is designed to give stability. It is 3 inches thick and made from high-density foam. The top layer is 2 inches thick. It is made from lesser density foam.

The two layers still supported by 2 additional layers. It is 4 inches thick. The base layer is using AirFlow System, which adds overall strength and dynamic support to the Tempurpedic mattress. The base layer also gives airflow throughout the mattress for cooling and additional comfort.

Video Surveillance Equipment are standard, elastic, and climbable. They may be sewed to fit complete the protection necessaries, while holding the budget in idea. Video Surveillance equipments consist of digital video recorders, DVR cards, USB capture tools and remote video surveillance software system. The Remote Witness video surveillance software provides the exploiter to record action activated high-resolution digital video and show multiple cameras at the same time from the camera position or a remote site. Remote Witness digital video surveillance equipment are so simple to work, and smoothly merge with existing video surveillance systems, and can be worked in a kind of diligences covering loss prevention, remote controlling, and law-breaking prevention or house protection. Video surveillance systems also consist of CCTV and digital video cameras. A CCTV system represents Closed Circuit Television. The circuit in that surveillance system is completely closed and all the components are linked. Conversely, a digital system provides remote control of cameras and good optical data, meaning that a someone may know matters and faces more intelligibly because of repaired optics and zooming. Data is increased digitally, not on tape and this implies that it can be found instantaneously. The improving require for trains with video surveillance systems is an enlargement which will indisputably effect the rail manufacture and it’s imminent that within ten years the installation of video surveillance systems will go the manufacture criterial. The installation of video surveillance equipment on board trains is evident for a list of causes like the security of firm assets and the protection of the environment and innovation of “secure zones” in public arenas.

Hot tubs can be a pricey expenditure for any homeowner, with the average cost of today’s hot tub close to five thousand dollars. Although not as big of an expense as remodeling the kitchen or putting in a new in-ground pool, hot tubs are still quite a lofty investment for a lot of people. Due to the substantial cost of purchasing one of today’s portable spas, it is important to consider how much a tub can actually contribute to your home’s value. Even though a tub is considered a luxury or pleasure item, you should still consider whether adding a spa to your existing landscape is a sufficient addition to ensure that you will get your money back when your home or property is sold.

While there is no generally accepted across the board rule when it comes to determining exactly how much hot tubs actually add to a home’s value, an attractive portable spa is still considered to be a home improvement. As with most other forms of home improvement, there is no doubt that they can add to your home’s overall value. However, it is very unlikely that you will be able to recover the full cost of the purchase and installation of the spa if you decide to sell your home. If you are looking into tubs, it should not be for the sheer purpose of increasing your home’s value, but should be something for you and your loved ones to appreciate and have fun with.

However, one of the added benefits that hot tubs provide is that they can add to the value of your home and improve the overall attractiveness of the property for those who could potentially buy it. Since most tub covers are pretty heavy to lift and are accompanied by locks, hot tubs do not pose the same hazard to children that unattended swimming pools do. In addition, routine maintenance and cleaning tasks are less complex than with swimming pools. To a potential homebuyer, tubs do not offer any real downsides, and are almost always seen as a plus in terms of the investment.

In a time when the real estate market is tight, homeowners want to get the most out of their property. The fact that tubs can add to the value of the property means that potential buyers could be willing to pay more for your home when you decide to put it on the market. However, this generally depends on the area of the country in which you live. While hot tubs aren’t sought out as much in warmer climates that don’t experience a great deal of cold temperatures, they can be an added convenience and also huge selling point in parts of the country where evenings are cool year round, especially areas like the Pacific Northwest. Regardless of where you live, however, the allure of soothing jets on sore and tired muscles is always very tempting, and to families who frequently entertain, hot tubs give friends and family a great reason to visit.

“The best time to plant roses is in early spring,” some would say. Others would disagree and quip, “Actually, roses are best planted in early winter when they’re dormant!” So, which is it really?

The answer lies in between, or in both! We should always consider each rose as an individual and there is no specific time to plant all kinds of rose. The sturdiest roses for example can be planted anytime and will still likely grow. Some cultivars however have to be planted cautiously even in its dormant phase.

What needs to be considered in planting roses therefore is its capacity to sustain planting shock and outgrow it. In any case, almost all roses are dormant in winter. The only ones that keep growing are those in the tropics. For most cultivars, this is the best time for planting or replanting. As long as the ground doesn’t freeze, roses can adapt the easiest during this season. If the ground freezes, however, the plant will suffer greatly.

Plants grow the slowest during cold seasons and for the rose, growth almost grinds to a halt. This is an opportunity for the rosarian to plant the rose without it “noticing” much. By the time spring comes and the rose starts to grow again, its roots will have settled in the ground giving the plant minimal stress. The only thing the rosarian should worry about is to sustain the plant throughout the winter and ensure the acceleration of root growth to make up for foliage and bloom.

As you may know, unlike other liquids, water expands when it freezes. Water freezing in the roots and the stems of the rose will therefore rupture the cells they are in and around them as they freeze. This is what rosarians try to avoid during winter. Especially for newly planted roses whose cells are not as fit as the already growing ones winter is indeed a big bummer.

If you live in warmer states and have mild to sometimes even warm winters, your rose will still likely be growing throughout winter, albeit, slowly. In winters, therefore, you can still have the rose acclimated to the new soil.

Considering the above factors, the best time for rose planting therefore will depend upon your climate. If you have winters where there is the danger of frost, you should opt to plant your rose (or any other plant for that matter) in the late winter when the danger of frosting is gone. As follows, the colder your winter, the later you should plant. You may even plant in early spring when some growth in other plants has broken.

If your winters are just mild and the ground doesn’t freeze, planting in late fall or early winter will be great. This gives the plant plenty of time to adjust to the new ground. As long as you have taken winter planting precautions, your rose will grow great.

The breed of the rose will also be a big part in your decision to plant it. The general rule is the harder the wood, the earlier you should plant and the hardier the cultivar, the higher the chances of growth in any given time.

Most gardeners are environmentally friendly because of their working so close to nature. And, concomitant to that, most gardeners aim for organically efficient garden pest control, and this is generally achievable, though there always seem to be some that require containment with chemical.

Whatever is your preference, efficient pest control is an important part of garden management.

Safer Solutions
Healthy soil and healthy plants are basically the best defence against disease and pests as nature provides plants with many defence mechanisms which good soil and plant care will help become optimised.

Additionally, choosing plants that are best suited for your hardiness zone – climate and growing conditions then will match them better – there are often problems when you start to grow plants not optimally suited for that zone, for example, my growing roses in the tropics was always fraught with fungal disease. (I persisted though – but it was more work and vigilance).

Plants from outside your zone may be more susceptible to disease because they have no natural resistance.

While initially it may mean more work, you can achieve a healthy garden without resorting to chemicals. Compost enriched and well-nourished soil, good mulching and growing the correct plants for the spot normally will reduce a large amount of common garden problems.

An ounce of prevention saves pounds of work.
Vigilance is a key to preventing insects, wildlife, or disease from destroying your crops or garden plants.
•	Don’t buy plants that are suspect – examine them carefully before purchasing.
•	Practice good hygiene (clean your tools, disinfect pots etc)
•	Don’t put diseased plant detritus into the compost – trash them.
•	Be water-wise – use drip irrigation systems – you will use less water and be more effective.
•	Weed regularly – eventually you get on top!

Make It A Habit To Stroll Around Your Garden Regularly (which is relaxing anyway)
This allows you to catch problems in the early stages and you can act to remedy them before they get a real hold on. Check for signs of insects or disease, and don’t water the garden too late in the day, as this encourages fungal disease. An exception is if the plants are suffering due to heat stress during a heatwave – try to keep the foliage water-free.

Remember, a pesticide that is regarded as ’safe’ today could easily be off the market tomorrow because it is later discovered to have long-term environmental impacts or other unintended side effects.

I recall a beautiful day last spring when it was just barely getting warm enough to spend the day outside in the yard doing what I love to do the most, creating a garden area. I like to do something different each yard to have a unique look. So I had to come up with a unique idea.

The summer before we had hired a tree service to remove a beautiful pine tree that was in our front yard. The tree was gorgeous but it was planted in a spot that was not in good scale for the size of the tree. The pine tree took up a 12 foot radius in a small front yard and it had grown over 2 stories tall, and was planted to close to a mature Bradford Pear tree. I might need to mention that over the past 3 years we had completely redone the landscaping and had removed a lot of outdated shrubs too.

The day after the tree was removed my son and I raked the area where the tree had been planted and I decided that I would plant seeds I had saved from the year before. Because of the time of year it was most garden centers had very little to chose from. This was in July and I planted giant mixed zinnias seeds and mixed marigolds seeds in the area. Within a week, I had sprouts from the seeds. That was such a pretty garden I used a picture of it on my wedding invitation. We had a fall wedding in October and the flowers were in bloom long before and during the wedding.

Now I wanted to have some perennials planted in the space so it would not be totally bare in the winter season. I had looked at local garden centers and the prices of plants just seemed expensive. I already had a large variety of plants in my yard, due to my love for gardening. I have landscaping in my front, sides and back yard. I also save seeds from several varieties of annuals and perennials each year.

I decided to create a free garden. I had so much fun shopping from you own resources. Most of my existing landscaping was in its second or third year so some plants needed dividing. I also had some plants were obviously planted to close together, and like I said before I like to change things up a bit each year. I shopped my entire yard that day and divided or transplanted 20 different plants into the space where the pine tree had been. I planted a red Japanese maple, knockout rose – doing much better in it’s new location! – vinca vine, sedum, lambs ear, rose of sharon, various ground covers, and more.

I am happy to say that out of 20 free plants 19 survived and thrived in their new location. I added more zinnias and marigolds again this time but in a different pattern. I added sunflowers too. I also added several terra cotta pots turned on their side, on an angle featuring more annuals. The free garden was very beautiful. I did purchase one item, although it was not a planned part of the garden. The item I am referring to is a concrete statue of a mule. It is perfect because our company name is Rented Mule. I intend to make a sign out of barn wood and attach it to the mule. I also have lots of pieces of cedar in the landscaping, all free from a broken tree we salvaged after a wind storm at my father in law’s home.

My husband and I later added natural stone as a border and did a very unique design, not just a circle. It
is a kidney shape with a circle surrounding it. The back of the kidney shaped wall is raised and in the process of becoming a living wall. Openings are created within the stone wall to have areas where plants can trail over the sides. We designed it and are excited to see how that part of the project turns out this spring.

We collected the stones for the border from a roadside area where rocks slide off the the hillside. We have natural stone borders throughout our landscaping. The stone border is beautiful and we got it free too. Gathering stone is a lot of hard work, but with the amount of landscaping we have it would have been way to expensive to purchase all of it.

Now I am looking forward to spring time so I can get started on more garden areas. I have saved lots of flower seeds and can’t wait to get started planting. I have started selling my flower seeds at festivals and online.

Life was created in the Garden of Eden. Since then ‘we’ have always had infinity with the environment in which we surround ourselves.

1 Nature’s Teachings:

The teachings and experiences gained from our gardens are manifest. We enjoy the sense of expectation and excitement as we prepare the soil, plant the seeds, perform the watering, nurture the seedlings to growth, harvest the crops and then taste the delights at our tables. The dedication to these actions teaches us fundamental elements that are necessary in our everyday lives discipline, responsibility, patience and reward. Thus, providing an environment to enable our children to assist us in the garden has many benefits all round.

2 Exercise:

Whether you are physically able bodied or disabled there are many activities for you in the garden. Gardening offers physical exercise in many forms to all ages. Calories are burnt at a much faster rate than people think whilst gardening, thus our bodies are nurtured towards greater physical fitness.

3 Diet:

By choosing what to grow in our gardens and how to grow it, can enhance our dietary well being. Home grown produce has been shown to provide us greater nutritional value to our diets than those foods shipped from afar.

Remember also, you will be receiving the necessary Vitamin D synthesis whilst out in the sunshine which is an added bonus! Always remember to apply sunscreen through.

4 Psychologically:

Gardens and gardening take us away from the hustle and bustle of our hectic lifestyles, providing us with relaxation and enjoyment. Research has shown that stresses can be reduced with time spent in the garden. Blood pressures have been recorded lower and depressions lifted, even children with ADD have been shown to have more spent more time concentrating following time spent in a garden.

5 Social Connection:

Our gardens provide us with a place to entertain or share with our families and friends. The possibility of joining a group of people with the same interests, the ability to share accomplishments i.e. that extra large pumpkin!

With the state of the economy at present, communal gardens and victory gardens are on the rise within local communities who are banding together in the pursuit of attaining greater yields of produce through shared labors. So why not check out your local area for information and consider joining a loca group of likeminded individuals.
